For most students like myself, maths is one of the more difficult subjects that they encounter throughout their schooling years. There is a good reason for that. Math has always been a subject that requires a different mode of learning. Here I’ll list a few approaches that will help you in improving your math grades.

• Get in the game: Math isn’t a spectator sport. You cannot learn just by attending class and watching the teacher work through problems. In order to learn mathematics you must be actively involved in the learning process. You’ve got to attend class and pay attention. With other subjects, you can get away with doing no homework, unfortunately, that is not the case with Maths. You’ve got to work on homework problems, even if your teacher doesn’t assign any. Practice makes perfect.

• It’s not a test of your memory: You can pass a geography class by simply memorizing countries and climatic events. While there is a fair amount of memorization of formulas in maths you need to understand how to use them. Formulas are very general and require you to identify the parts in the problem that correspond to parts in the formula. If you don’t understand how the formula works and the principle behind it, it can often be very difficult to use them.

• Build your foundations first: Math is very much like learning to read. If you don’t know your letter sounds then you have no hope of being able to sound out words of course there is no way possible that you could read a book. All math courses are taught in a specific sequence because the every topic builds on the previous topic. Almost everything you do in a math class will depend on topics that you’ve previously learned. Make sure you’ve mastered a topic before moving on to the next one. For example, you’ll find it quite difficult to move on to calculus if you don’t have a solid understanding of Algebra and Trigonometry.

Remember, there is no set way to learn maths. Everyone studies differently and all that anyone can ask of us is that we do the best that we can. In saying that, the tips above will help you along in your math studies, and give you confidence. And confidence is the name of the game in learning any level of Math.
